Brand History
VIM Tools was founded in 1931, beginning as a small, mobile operation where the founder sold specialty automotive tools directly to workshops across the U.S. The company’s name originated from its first product — the Flexible Carbon Scraper — which became widely popular among mechanics.
In 1932, Ray Durston established the Flexible Carbon Scraper Co. in Pasadena, California, investing his $200 WWII veteran bonus to start manufacturing tools under the VIM brand. By 1944, Durston acquired the VIM Tool Company trademark, and began producing a complete range of specialty automotive tools.
Through the 1940s–1970s, VIM Tools expanded its production line, manufacturing sockets, ratchets, and specialty repair tools. By 1959, the company had moved into a large facility in La Verne, California, to accommodate over 2,000 product types.
In 2020, Durston Manufacturing Co. — the parent company of VIM Tools — was acquired by Luis E. Lopez and relocated to Tampa, Florida. Today, VIM Tools continues its 90+ years of legacy, focusing on professional-grade automotive tools known for durability, precision, and innovation.
