How to Use a Cooling System Leakage Tester and Vacuum-Type Coolant Refilling Kit

A vehicle’s cooling system is essential for keeping the engine at optimal operating temperatures. Over time, leaks or trapped air pockets can cause overheating, engine damage, and costly repairs. 1. Before You Begin

  • Ensure the engine is completely cool before removing the radiator cap.

Purpose:

To check if the cooling system is sealed and free of leaks before refilling.

Steps:

  1. Remove the radiator cap or expansion tank cap.

  3. Attach the tester’s pump securely to the adapter.
  4. Pump to the system’s specified pressure (usually 13–16 psi / 0.9–1.1 bar).
  5. Observe the gauge: If the pressure remains stable for several minutes, no leaks are present. If the pressure drops, inspect all components (radiator, hoses, water pump, heater core, engine block) for leaks.

3. Vacuum Refilling – Vacuum-Type Coolant Refilling Kit

Purpose:

To remove air from the cooling system and refill it with coolant without creating air pockets.

Steps:

  1. Connect the vacuum filler to the radiator neck or expansion tank.
  2. Attach the compressed air supply to the tool and create a vacuum in the system (watch the vacuum gauge; target: -20 to -25 inHg).
  3. Close the valve and check for vacuum loss. If the gauge drops, a leak is still present and must be repaired.
  4. Place the coolant hose into a container of the correct coolant mixture.
  5. Open the valve to allow coolant to be drawn into the system under vacuum.
  6. Once filled, remove the tool and reinstall the radiator cap.
  7. Start the engine, run to operating temperature, and check for proper coolant circulation and heater function.
